Greystone Ladies Club: A Warm Welcoming for the Greystone Community

When joining a club or an organization, most prospective members will ask, “Will I fit in?” As you explore organizations, you naturally want to know if your values align, if you’ll feel accepted, and whether the community will be inclusive.

For the past 30 years, the Greystone Ladies Club (GLC) has been answering these questions for women in the Greystone community by creating a welcoming space where women can connect outside of tennis or golf.

Over the decades, the GLC has built a unique environment where women can be part of something bigger.

The Heart of the Greystone Ladies Club

Philanthropy is at the core of the GLC. Members actively support the Shelby County Department of Human Resources by providing Christmas gifts for foster children, fulfilling wish lists with thoughtful care.

“The Ladies Club, from its inception, has been very generous,” said Sue Nuby, the club’s Vice President of Communications. “We support the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham with their Christmas tree illumination events and provide a scholarship to a senior at Spain Park High School.”

Generosity has been a cornerstone of the Greystone Ladies Club since its inception, and it remains a defining quality today.

From the First Hello

The Ladies Club thrives on inclusivity, and making its new members feel welcome is a top priority.

"We’re a friendly group—when you walk into a Ladies Club function, you don’t feel like a stranger, someone will always talk to you and greet you,” Nuby said.

When new residents move into the Founders or Legacy neighborhoods, the GLC reaches out with a thoughtful gesture—a gift certificate and a personalized welcome letter. This initial contact often leads to further engagement when the new member expresses interest in attending a club program.

From there, the GLC ensures no one feels like a stranger. Newcomers are offered a hostess who greets them at the door, introduces them to other members, and sits with them during events. The hostess’ role can continue as long as the new member wishes.

For over 15 years, the GLC has fostered a sense of belonging, balancing its membership equally between Greystone Members and residents. It’s a testament to their commitment to connection and community, which is further supported by proactive outreach efforts made possible through partnerships with local HOAs.

From the very first interaction, the club’s focus is clear—making everyone feel at home.

Creating Space for Everyone

The GLC, while independent from Greystone Golf & Country Club, allows country club members to join, regardless as to where they live, in addition to residents. This policy strengthened ties between the two groups and brought many country club members onto the club’s board.

Diverse Opportunities

The GLC offers various programs designed to foster community, learning, and enjoyment for its members. Monthly luncheons, held from September through May at the Founders Clubhouse, are a cornerstone of the club's activities. These events begin with social time over coffee, followed by engaging programs, and conclude with a shared lunch.

The club organizes special after-hours events tailored to accommodate diverse schedules, providing opportunities for members to connect outside of regular meetings. These programs help to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all women in the community, whether they are new residents or long-time members.

A Place to Belong

If you’re looking for a “darling” community to belong to, you’re looking in the right place. After 30 years, the Ladies Club fosters a diverse and welcoming community, bringing together women from different backgrounds and interests.

“I’m not aware of a neighborhood club that has been in existence for over 30 years,” Nuby said. “We even survived COVID. Besides our charity work, we have wonderful programs. It’s just such a darling club.”
