Growing with Greystone: Sloan Beatty’s Story

Sloan Beatty first fell in love with Greystone Golf & Country Club in the early 1990s while attending the Bruno's Memorial Classic, now known as the Regions Tradition

"I was enamored with the neighborhood, the golf course, the fact that something so special was in Birmingham that I always wanted to be a member," Sloan recalls.

His demanding career required him to travel most of the year, but the dream of joining Greystone never faded. In 2009, Sloan and his wife welcomed twin daughters, and they joined Greystone when the girls turned three.

"When the girls were little, Greystone was where we wanted them to grow up," Sloan shares. That was just the beginning of the Beattys’ story at Greystone Golf & Country Club.

From Ballet to Birdies: Sloan’s Daughters

Sloan's twin daughters began with dance and ballet before discovering their love for golf. As they grew, they tried tennis for a few years when their dad introduced them to the game.

"We have the best training facility in the country as far as I'm concerned with Mark Blackburn and the team at the Blackburn Golf Academy," Sloan says proudly. "They got involved in tournaments and they just fell in love with it. Now they are very accomplished for their age."

Camille and Cariann are top-performing students, both with over 4.0 GPAs and aspirations for D1 college golf. While Sloan cherishes and supports these impressive goals, he values his quality time with his daughters even more.

"When we're on the golf course, all we do is talk. And it's just a wonderful time for dad and daughters."

Stepping Into Leadership

Sloan began serving on committees shortly after joining Greystone.

"From there, it migrated to the Regions Tradition Committee," he says. These experiences allowed him to see the inner workings of the club and contribute to its community.

The invitation to serve on the board came unexpectedly. After his first board term, members nominated him for president.

"So it's very, very flattering and I really love this club," he exclaims. As president, he focuses on listening to members and supporting initiatives that enhance their experiences.

Greystone’s Next Chapter

"I am excited to be in this position while our focus is planning for the future," says Sloan. His priority is ensuring Greystone maintains its excellence after a decade of improvements.

"The Board has worked with two of the top firms in the country to develop master plans for the future of the Founders Clubhouse and golf course," he explains. These partnerships with Chambers on the clubhouse and Bill Bergin as the golf course architect bring expert guidance to Greystone's vision.

"We're working with Club Benchmarking to develop a reserve study to understand our obligatory capital needs for the future." Sloan mentions. "These tools will allow us to create a five-year plan and continue our path to be the Club of choice in Birmingham and beyond.”

Throughout this process, member engagement remains essential. "This level of planning ensures we have it done right, and members are excited about our future."

Seeing Greystone Through Multiple Lenses

As a father, member, and Club President, Sloan brings a unique perspective to Greystone. He witnesses firsthand how the club creates a safe haven for families.

In his words, Sloan wants members "to be able to have a nice, serene environment for your family where everyone knows your name and they know what you like." He wants every visit to feel like coming home–and every engagement to provide peace of mind for parents.

"They can have that special sense of security and love and that's what makes it tremendous," he exclaims. Sloan values how Greystone offers the freedom he experienced growing up–where children ride bikes and enjoy outdoor activities in a safe space.

As the club continues to grow and enhance its facilities, Sloan remains focused on what matters most: enhancing people’s lives and encouraging fun and enjoyment.

For the Beatty family and countless others, Greystone Country Club is home.
