The Grey Cup Golf Tournament at Greystone Golf and Country Club is more than just a competition; it’s a beloved tradition that celebrates community, camaraderie, and the love of golf. This annual event, held every October, has become one of the most anticipated events of the year for Greystone Members.
The Grey Cup started in 2005 as a small competition with only 24 players. Over the years, it has expanded to include 72 players—36 on each team—competing in a thrilling Ryder Cup-style format. The excitement and enthusiasm among the tournament’s participants are what really contributed to its growth.
Members are split into two teams, representing Legacy or Founders, Greystone’s two golf courses. “Most guys haven't been on a team since high school,” says Stephen Breaseale, a Greystone Member since 2015. “So that adds a different dynamic to this event–there's a lot of camaraderie.”
Captained by the courses' respective Golf Professionals, Kevan Maxwell, and Jon Gibbons, the teams enter a three-day event rooted in fun traditions and light-hearted banter.
Jon Gibbons shares “There is so much excitement around this event. When I first participated in the tournament the Founders team lost. Ever since then my team and I strive to win, not just because of the bragging rights, but because it is so much fun.”
On Friday night, participants gather for the inaugural steak dinner. Members proudly wear medals from past Grey Cup victories–The Founders team being the reigning champs–sparking friendly banter between the two teams. The evening wraps up with team pairings and the distribution of tournament attire.
The competition begins on Saturday with two rounds of play: 4-ball in the morning and alternate shot in the afternoon. The excitement builds on Sunday with singles matches, where every point counts. Each match win earns a point, and ties earn half a point, keeping the atmosphere tense and competitive for both players and Member spectators.
“We have plenty of carts for spouses of participants to ride in and follow along with the tournament. We even have the standings posted online at our Golf Genius site for Members to look at throughout the day,” notes Jon.
Greystone uses a unique merit-based system to reward golf participation throughout the year. Members earn points by participating in various Club tournaments from April through October.
The top 50 players based on points automatically qualify for The Grey Cup, and they can choose which team to play for (Legacy or Founders). The remaining 22 spots are filled through a one-day qualifier, allowing those who couldn’t participate in every event to still have a chance to compete in The Grey Cup.
Unlike other golf tournaments, The Grey Cup prioritizes community and camaraderie over financial gain. There’s no monetary prize at stake—just pride, a coveted medal, and, of course, bragging rights.
One of the most memorable aspects of The Grey Cup is the award ceremony, where the losing team presents medals to the winners. This adds a light-hearted and sportsmanlike touch to the event’s conclusion. A celebratory champagne bath for the winning team then follows.
This tradition embodies the friendly, yet competitive spirit of The Grey Cup, making it a highlight of the year for all involved.
For Greystone Members, The Grey Cup is the ultimate expression of what makes the Club special—a strong sense of community, a passion for golf, and a shared commitment to fun and friendly competition.
